Understanding

What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication for HIV-negative people who want to protect themselves against HIV infection.

The medication is a combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir, taken as a tablet. It can be taken continuously (one tablet a day) or “on demand” following a defined schedule before and after higher-risk sex.

Who it's for

PrEP could be right for you if…

PrEP is intended for HIV-negative people at increased risk of HIV infection. It may be considered in the following situations:

Condomless sex

You have sex without a condom with partners whose HIV status is unknown or positive (without suppressive treatment).

Recent STI

You have had a sexually transmitted infection (syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia) in the past 12 months.

Travel to high-prevalence areas

You travel to regions with a high HIV prevalence and might have sexual contact there.

FAQ

Everything you need to know about PrEP

Is PrEP covered by insurance in Switzerland?

Yes. Since 1 July 2024, PrEP (emtricitabine/tenofovir) has been covered by compulsory health insurance (AOS/OKP) in Switzerland. This includes the medication and the necessary follow-up tests. The usual deductible and co-payment apply.

How is PrEP taken?

There are two dosing schedules:

  • Continuous: one tablet a day, every day. Suitable for people with regular sexual activity.
  • On demand: two tablets between 2 and 24 hours before sex, then one tablet 24 h and another 48 h after the first dose. This schedule is reserved for men who have sex with men (MSM) with occasional sexual activity.

Your doctor will help you choose the most suitable schedule.

Does PrEP have side effects?

PrEP is generally well tolerated. Some people experience mild effects at the start of treatment (nausea, headaches, tiredness) that usually resolve within a few weeks. Kidney function is monitored regularly to ensure the treatment stays safe long term.

Does PrEP protect against other STIs?

No. PrEP protects only against HIV. It does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, hepatitis, etc.). That's why regular STI screening is an integral part of PrEP follow-up, and condom use remains recommended.

How often do I need to come back?

Follow-up is usually quarterly (every 3 months). Each visit includes an HIV test, STI screening, kidney-function monitoring and a discussion of your experience with the treatment. This regular follow-up is essential for your safety and is covered by insurance.

Can I start PrEP quickly?

Yes. In line with the latest SwissPrEPared recommendations (Guidance 4.0), a rapid PrEP start is possible. After a first consultation with blood work and a negative HIV test, treatment can begin without delay. Contact us by e-mail to schedule your appointment.

Is the consultation confidential?

Absolutely. All our consultations are bound by medical secrecy. Your care is strictly confidential, in a welcoming and judgement-free setting.
